Focus on Education at Airfield School

This March will mark our second anniversary of the opening of the Airfield School. Since that time our volunteers have worked to improve the school on many levels by working with staff, parents and students. Top challenges include improving attendance and punctuality of students and teachers, the need to improve hygiene through proper use of sanitation facilities and water usage, the need to provide children with proper nutrition, the need to get more and better teaching materials and school supplies, and most importantly the need to make sure that all children will learn how to read, write and do basic math.

In partnership with the Ghanaian government we have an excellent new headmaster and the staff is developing nicely. There are now after-school classes to help those in grades 4-7 improve in reading, and most exciting – a healthy lunch is now provided for all the primary students and their teachers.

Our current challenges include working with the government to bring electricity to the school and building a Junior High School. We have formed a School Management Committee that is entrusted with these and other development and education concerns.
