About the School

    The Bishop Forson School Complex opened in 2003 with six teachers and eight pupils. Today the school provides a quality education to more than 250 children who live in the rural and deprived communities in the Kpando District along the Volta Lake.

    Overall Goals of Pagus:Africa in association with the Bishop Forson School Complex:

    • To assist the school in providing a quality education to children from Pre K-Junior High School
    • To provide services for needy children in the community. These include housing and care, food, medical services, and a quality education.
    • To foster a caring community focused on service and possibility.
    • To promote community awareness and inspire parents of school children to contribute to continual improvement of their school.
    • To assist the school to be economically viable for a sustainable future.

    School Background :The Bishop Forson School Complex opened in 2003 with six teachers and eight pupils. It was founded by Rev. Forson Glover who grew up in rural Ghana and faced many challenges in his own quest for an education.

    Staff: There are approximately 21 teachers and 9 non-teaching staff members

    Students: There are approximately 250 children attending BFSC who are primarily living in the  Kpando District along the Volta Lake.

    Curriculum:

    Subjects taught include the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) curriculum for Basic Schools modified by the Pedagogical Department of the school. The school places emphasis in all academic subjects so students can do well in West African exams (BECE) to be admitted into a High School. Increasingly the school recognizes the importance of the arts, sports and civic aspects of the school experience.

    Academic Calendar:

    There are three terms in each academic year.

    1st term: September – December / 2nd term: January – April  / 3rd term: May – July

    Infrastucture:

    • The school operates on six acres of land and has 15 additional acres for expansion and other development related projects.
    • The school blocks include Sigward (Pre-school block), Phanuel (The Basic School Block) and the Junior Secondary School Block (J.S.S.),that houses the library and the Computer Lab
    • There is  a boarding facility that can house up to 60 children. While initially built to house orphans and abused children, the facility is also home to children from towns too far to commute daily
    • There is a canteen on site and meals are prepared daily for children and staff
    • Electricity was installed in June 2007
    • New sanitation facilities were built in 2010
    • A borehole to provide clean water was drilled in 2010
    • Pagus donated a library in 2008 and continues to provide books to the collection
    • Pagus donated a computer lab in 2008. The upkeep and monitoring of equipment  is an ongoing challenge
    • The school farms a variety of vegetables and has many mango trees providing healthy and delicious fruit for all the children
